Tiritiri Matangi Lighthouse, located on an island in the Hauraki Gulf 28 kilometres north of Auckland, is the oldest lighthouse in New Zealand still in operation. Built in 1864 from cast iron and standing 20 metres high, it represents the country's best-preserved lighthouse complex. The structure was once the most powerful lighthouse in the Southern Hemisphere. Now owned and operated by Maritime New Zealand, it holds dual heritage designations as an Auckland Council Category A historic place and a Heritage New Zealand Category 1 historic place.
