The Venkateswara Temple at Tirumala, located in the hills of Tirupati district, Andhra Pradesh, is a major Hindu shrine dedicated to Venkateswara, a form of Vishnu believed to have manifested on earth to protect humanity during the Kali Yuga. Built in Dravidian architectural style and traditionally attributed to the Tondaiman rulers with expansions under the Cholas, Pandyas, and Vijayanagar dynasties, the temple developed over centuries beginning around 300 CE. Perched on Venkatadri, the seventh peak of the Tirumala Hills at approximately 980 metres elevation, the sanctuary houses the deity in its inner sanctum, the Ananda Nilayam, facing east. The temple follows the Vaikhanasa Agama tradition and ranks among the eight self-manifested Vishnu temples and the 108 Divya Desam sites. Administered by the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams, it serves as one of the world's wealthiest Hindu temples and features modern pilgrimage infrastructure including queue complexes, free meal facilities, and lodging sites.
