Situated on the banks of the Uyyakondan river in Tiruchirappalli district, Tamil Nadu, this Hindu temple in the Dravidian architectural style is dedicated to Shiva, worshipped here as Uyyakondan and represented by the lingam. The temple complex spans four acres atop a 30-metre hillock and comprises multiple shrines, with those dedicated to Uyyakondar and his consorts Maivizhi and Kanniyumaiyal being the most prominent. Concentric rectangular granite walls enclose all shrines, and visitors ascend by a flight of steps from a basement housing the temple tank. The presiding deity is revered in the 7th-century Tamil Saiva canonical work Tevaram, authored by the Nayanars and earning the temple classification as a Paadal Petra Sthalam. Originally constructed by the Cholas, whose inscriptions remain visible in the complex, the temple is now maintained by the Government of Tamil Nadu's Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department. It observes four daily rituals and four annual festivals, with the Brahmotsavam celebration during Panguni (March–April) being the most significant.
