The Veerateeswarar Temple in Tirukoilur, a town in Tamil Nadu's Kallakurichi district, is a Dravidian-style shrine dedicated to Shiva, believed to date to the 10th-century Cholas period. Shiva is worshipped here as Veerateeswarar alongside his consort Parvathi, venerated as Periyanayagi. The temple holds the distinction of being a Paadal Petra Sthalam, revered in the 7th-century Tamil Saiva canonical text Tevaram by the Nayanmar saint poets. A granite wall encircles the temple, protecting its shrines, while two three-tiered Rajagopuram gateway towers rise above the sanctuaries of each deity. The temple maintains a rigorous ritual calendar, conducting six daily ceremonies and three significant yearly festivals—the Masimaham, Karthigai Somavaram, and Manickavasagar festival—drawing devotees during these sacred seasons. Now administered by the Tamil Nadu Hindu Religious and Endowment Board, the temple remains an active center of Shaivite worship.
