The Arunachalesvara Temple, also known as the Annamalaiyar Temple, is a monumental Hindu shrine dedicated to Shiva and Parvati, nestled at the foothills of Arunachala hill in Tiruvannamalai, Tamil Nadu. Built during the Chola Empire in the ninth century and enlarged under Vijayanagara rule from the thirteenth to fifteenth centuries, this Dravidian structure ranks among India's largest temples, spanning ten hectares. It comprises four towering gopurams, with the eastern tower reaching 66 meters across eleven stories, alongside countless shrines and a celebrated thousand-pillared hall constructed during the Vijayanagara period. As one of the Pancha Bhuta Sthalams associated with fire and a Paadal Petra Sthalam revered in medieval Tamil devotional literature, it houses the Agni Lingam, symbolizing the element of fire. The temple maintains six daily rituals and hosts the renowned Karthigai Deepam festival, when a great beacon is kindled atop the hill, visible for miles and embodying Shiva's fiery manifestation.
