The Adikesava Perumal Temple in Thiruvattar, Kanyakumari district, Tamil Nadu, is a Dravidian temple dedicated to Vishnu and recognized as one of the 108 Divya Desams—the holiest sites of Hindu Vaishnavism celebrated in Tamil hymns from the seventh and eighth centuries CE. Set in a picturesque location surrounded on three sides by the rivers Kothai, Pahrali, and Thamirabarani, the temple is distinguished by its depiction of Vishnu in a reclining position, earning it the epithet "The Srirangam of Chera Kingdom." According to stone inscriptions dating to 779 KE, the temple was established in the Treta Yuga and is said to have been consecrated by Parasurama. It is admired in the Padma Purana by Veda Vyasa in sections devoted to temples. Formerly the Rajya Temple and Bharadevatha shrine of the erstwhile Travancore state, it was transferred to the Tamil Nadu Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department following Indian state reorganization.
