The Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building, located in Shinjuku ward, is the seat of Tokyo's metropolitan government and the world's tallest city hall. Designed by Kenzō Tange and completed in 1991, the postmodern complex comprises three structures occupying separate city blocks. The tallest, Government Building No. 1, rises 48 stories (243.3 meters) and distinctly splits into two sections at the 33rd floor, a design intended to evoke both an integrated circuit and a Gothic cathedral. The complex includes Government Building No. 2, a 37-story structure, and the eight-story Metropolitan Assembly Building. Three levels of underground space extend beneath the main tower. The building features two free public observation decks on the 45th floor (202 meters high), each with gift shops and cafes, open on alternating days from 9:30 to 22:00.
