Tokyo Skytree, a steel broadcasting and observation tower in Sumida, Tokyo, stands 634 metres tall—the tallest tower in Japan since its completion on 29 February 2012 and opening to the public on 22 May 2012. Designed by Nikken Sekkei in a neo-futuristic style, it serves as the primary television and radio broadcast site for the Kantō region, replacing the older Tokyo Tower which became ineffective surrounded by high-rise buildings. The tower anchors a major commercial complex funded by Tobu Railway and six terrestrial broadcasters led by NHK, with adjacent train stations and the Sumida Aquarium nearby. At its full height achieved in early 2011, it ranks as the world's tallest tower and the third tallest structure overall.
