The Tuskegee Veterans Administration Medical Center in Alabama began in 1923 as the Tuskegee Home, part of the National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers system, and was developed on 464 acres adjacent to Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institute (now Tuskegee University), with 300 acres donated by the institute. Built in Colonial Revival and Neoclassical styles, the complex eventually comprised 27 buildings and provided long-term medical care for African-American World War I veterans in the segregated South, addressing a critical gap in veterans' services that were often denied or inadequate elsewhere. Following the creation of the Veterans Administration in 1930, the facility came under federal authority. Now listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it remains part of the Central Alabama Veterans Health Care System as the East Campus.
