Located in Columbia, South Carolina, the William Jennings Bryan Dorn Veterans Affairs Medical Center is a historic hospital complex comprising nineteen contributing buildings arranged as a national historic district. The majority of the oldest structures, dating from 1932, are two- to three-story brick buildings executed in Georgian Colonial Revival style, with additional construction completed in 1937, 1945, and 1946. A substantial expansion took place during the 1970s. The complex serves multiple functions, housing hospital, recreational, dining, and residential facilities connected by a covered walk. In 1978, President Jimmy Carter designated the facility in honor of U.S. Representative William Jennings Bryan Dorn of South Carolina. The medical center, operated by the Veterans Health Administration, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2009.
