Built in 1937 under the Works Progress Administration during the Great Depression, the Miami Beach Post Office is an Art Moderne structure designed by Howard Lovewell Cheney. The building's distinctive interior features a tall circular lobby topped with a cone-shaped roof and slender cupola, beneath which sits a small round fountain. A dramatic ten-foot-high wall of glass blocks crowns the main entrance's double doors, flooding the lobby with natural light and framed above by a large stone eagle. Gold-colored post office boxes line the walls beneath a three-part mural by native Floridian Charles Hardman, commissioned in 1940 by the Section of Fine Arts. Hardman's paintings—titled *Discovery*, *de Soto and the Indians*, and *Conference*—depict key moments in Florida's colonial and military history, from Ponce de León's 1513 arrival through negotiations following the Second Seminole War.
