Opened in 1994 on Chicago's Near West Side, the United Center is a major indoor arena designed by Populous that serves as home to the NBA's Chicago Bulls and NHL's Chicago Blackhawks. Named for corporate sponsor United Airlines, it seats up to 23,500—the largest capacity in the NBA and second largest in the NHL. The arena replaced the historic Chicago Stadium, which had stood across Madison Street since 1929. Owned by the Reinsdorf and Wirtz families, the United Center has hosted hundreds of sporting events and concerts annually, as well as the Democratic National Conventions in 1996 and 2024. The venue is notably home to a statue of Michael Jordan in his iconic flying pose, erected in 1994 and relocated indoors in 2017 as part of an atrium extension, alongside statues of Blackhawks players Bobby Hull and Stan Mikita.
