Located in Germantown, Maryland, the United States Department of Energy complex occupies a 1950s campus originally built as headquarters for the Atomic Energy Commission. Designed by the prominent New York firm Voorhees, Walker, Smith & Smith, the modernist complex's five original buildings were strategically sited at a distance deemed safe from potential nuclear attack on Washington, D.C. Constructed in 1957 from brick, stone, concrete, and metal, the campus reflects the era's technological ambitions and Cold War anxieties. The complex was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2016, recognizing its significance as one of two principal administrative centers for the Department of Energy.
