Upper Fells Point is a Baltimore neighborhood dating from 1845, located north of the historic Fells Point waterfront district and now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Originally populated by dock workers, the area transformed by the 1880s into an industrial center of canneries and factories that drew waves of Irish, Italian, and Polish immigrants, followed in the early 1900s by Jewish, Lithuanian, and Greek arrivals. Today it retains its character through tidy brick rowhouses lining tree-lined streets, though its demographic composition has shifted again—it is now the heart of Baltimore's Latino community, sometimes called "Spanish Town," with significant Mexican, Salvadoran, Puerto Rican, Honduran, Dominican, Guatemalan, Colombian, and Cuban populations. The neighborhood's architecture spans Greek Revival, Federal, Italianate, Second Empire, Chicago School, and Neoclassical styles. Centrally situated between Patterson Park, the dining and entertainment venues of Fells Point and Little Italy, and Johns Hopkins Hospital, Upper Fells Point has become home to both long-time residents and young urban professionals.
