The Virginia Avenue Colored School, located at 3628 Virginia Avenue in Louisville, Kentucky, is a Renaissance Revival building constructed in 1923 by African-American contractor Samuel M. Plato to relieve overcrowding at an earlier 1915 facility. It was Louisville's first purpose-built segregated school for African-Americans. The structure underwent expansions in 1954 and 1969 as attempts to circumvent forced integration, before being renamed Jessie R. Carter Elementary School in 1970 and finally integrated in 1975. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2004, the building now serves as home to the West End School, a private boys' boarding school.
