Armstrong Elementary School, located in Lynchburg, Virginia, is a historic Streamline Moderne school building that opened in 1954 for African-American students. The complex comprises five interconnected sections: a two-story, 12-bay brick veneer classroom block; a rectangular cafetorium with adjacent kitchen wing on the northeast end; a large rear gymnasium; and a small boiler room. Built as an equalization school designed to provide improved facilities before the 1954 Brown v. Board of Education decision outlawed racial segregation in public schools, the building represents a pivotal moment in American educational history. The property also encompasses the site of the original school, which was demolished in 1959. Armstrong Elementary School was recognized as a National Register of Historic Places listing in 2012 and holds designation as a Virginia Historic Landmark.
