Frank Lloyd Wright's only residential project in Houston, the William L. Thaxton Jr. House is a single-story Usonian residence built in 1955 for an insurance executive who sought a dwelling that was simultaneously a work of art and a functional entertaining space. Designed in 1954 but based on a floor plan Wright had conceived four years earlier for an unbuilt Stanford commission, this 1,800-square-foot home in Bunker Hill Village exemplifies Wright's geometric abstraction at an intimate scale. Constructed of concrete block and organized around a "diamond module" of 60- and 120-degree angles, the parallelogram-shaped house features red cement floors with diamond patterning, triangular skylights, and a pool positioned in the corner of the L-shaped plan just steps from the master bedroom. Wright furnished the interior entirely with his own designs, anchoring most pieces to the walls to preserve his spatial conception, and created unusual elements including a screened patio with a screened roof and triangle-shaped recessed lighting bays.
