Located in Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina, the Wright Brothers National Memorial (originally called the Kill Devil Hill Monument) commemorates the historic site where Wilbur and Orville Wright achieved the first successful, sustained, powered flights in a heavier-than-air machine between 1900 and 1903. The brothers had chosen this remote location for its steady winds—recommended by the U.S. Weather Bureau—and its isolation from population centers, which afforded them privacy for their experiments. Designed by architect Alfred Easton Poor and completed in 1931, the memorial adopts Art Deco styling and was constructed of granite, earning it a place on the National Register of Historic Places.
