Located at the southwest corner of 49th Street and Franklin Avenue in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, the Post Office is a two-storey late modernist concrete structure completed in 1956 as the first federal building in the city's New Town district. Built to centralize mail services and initially housing the territorial courts until 1978, it became a social anchor for the fledgling downtown community after Yellowknife's post-war expansion from its original peninsula gold-mining settlement. The building has undergone multiple transformations—a 1958 rear pavilion addition, reconstruction following a 1968 fire, and extensive 1990s renovation—yet retains its fundamental modernist form. Designated a City of Yellowknife Heritage Site in 2006 in recognition of its enduring civic importance, the building has been privately owned since 2010 while continuing to serve Canada Post operations.
