Zion Poplars Baptist Church, located near Gloucester in Gloucester County, Virginia, is a Gothic Revival structure built in 1894 and designed by Frank Braxton, a former slave. One of the oldest independent African American congregations in the county, the church served multifaceted roles in its community—not only as a place of worship but also for economic and educational advancement. Its architectural style combines Gothic Revival elements with vernacular detailing. The church takes its name from its humble origins: the congregation's first services were held beneath seven united poplar trees, four of which remain on the grounds today. The building was designated a Virginia Historic Landmark and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1999.
