Zürich Hauptbahnhof, Switzerland's largest railway station and one of Europe's busiest, stands at the northern end of Zurich's Bahnhofstrasse in Renaissance Revival style. Designed by Jakob Friedrich Wanner and built in 1847 as the terminus of the Spanisch Brötli Bahn—the first railway constructed entirely within Switzerland—the station has evolved into a major international hub serving Germany, Italy, Austria, and France. Today it handles up to 2,915 trains daily, making it one of the world's busiest railway stations; it was ranked Europe's best in both 2023 and 2024. The complex structure spans multiple levels, with platforms at ground and underground levels connected by passages and the ShopVille shopping mall, while the Sihl river passes beneath the station in a tunnel with tracks above and below. Designated a class A Swiss cultural property of national significance, the station anchors the area near the confluence of the Limmat and Sihl rivers in central Zurich.
