Located in Chicago, 181 West Madison Street is a 207-meter glass office tower completed in 1990 by architect César Pelli—his first and only finished skyscraper in the city. The 50-story building, developed by Miglin-Beitler Developments, is distinguished by a recessed crown whose top corners are illuminated in white, with additional colored lighting for various holidays. The same developer and architect had previously envisioned the far more ambitious Miglin-Beitler Skyneedle nearby in 1989, a proposed 610-meter, 125-story structure that would have been the world's tallest building, though plans were abandoned due to a weak real estate market.
