Rising 1,128 feet (344 meters) above Chicago's Magnificent Mile, 875 North Michigan Avenue is a 100-story supertall skyscraper designed by Skidmore, Owings and Merrill, with chief designer Bruce Graham and structural engineer Fazlur Rahman Khan. Completed in 1969 using glass, steel, and aluminum in the high-tech architectural style, the building was the world's second-tallest when it topped out in May 1968, surpassed only by the Empire State Building. Originally named for John Hancock Mutual Life Insurance Company, the building combines office space, restaurants, and approximately 700 residences—including, at its completion, the world's highest residence. Notable features include the 44th-floor sky lobby with the nation's highest indoor swimming pool, and the observatory 360 Chicago on the 95th floor, which offers 360-degree views extending over 80 miles across the city and surrounding states. The observation deck also features TILT, a moving platform that tilts visitors to a 30-degree angle over the building's edge.
