The Alte Oper in Frankfurt's Innenstadt banking district was constructed in 1880 as the city's principal opera house, designed by architect Richard Lucae. Destroyed by bombing in 1944, the building was reconstructed during the 1970s and reopened in 1981 as a concert hall, featuring a large performance space alongside smaller venues. The structure is built of concrete and stands as a cultural heritage monument in Hesse. The square before it, Opernplatz, retains its historical name. During its original tenure as an opera house, the venue hosted notable premieres including Schreker's *Der ferne Klang* and Carl Orff's *Carmina Burana* in 1937. Opera performances have since moved to the Opern- und Schauspielhaus Frankfurt, completed in 1951.
