The Altria Theater in Richmond, Virginia, is a Moorish Revival structure designed by Marcellus E. Wright Sr. in association with Charles M. Robinson and Charles Custer Robinson, completed in 1927 on the southwest corner of Monroe Park at Virginia Commonwealth University. Originally built for the Shriners of the Acca Temple Shrine and later nicknamed "the Mosque" for its distinctive architectural style, the building features elaborate ornamental tilework by J. R. Ray of the Richmond Tile and Mosaic Works and interior decoration by J. Frank Jones of the Rambusch Decorating Company. After the City of Richmond purchased the building in 1940, its basement served varied municipal purposes, including offices and facilities for the Richmond Police Department. Renamed the Landmark Theater in 1995 following restoration, it received its current name in 2014 after a major renovation funded by Altria. Today it functions as Richmond's largest performing arts venue, hosting major musical and theatrical performers.
