The Cape Neddick Light stands on a rocky islet known as the "Nubble" off the coast of York, Maine, a 41-foot brick tower sheathed in cast iron completed in 1879. Though modest in height, the lighthouse reaches an effective elevation of 88 feet above sea level due to its dramatic rocky perch. After decades of planning beginning in 1837, Congress appropriated funds in 1874, and the U.S. Lighthouse Service dedicated the station and brought it into operation in 1879, where it remains active today. The tower is distinguished by an unusual decorative detail: the brass stanchions of the lantern room's walkway railing are adorned with four-inch replicas of the lighthouse itself. Now listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Cape Neddick Light exemplifies nineteenth-century American maritime engineering and continues to serve navigational purposes more than a century after its construction.
