Castle Drogo, near Drewsteignton in Devon, is a country house and the last castle built in England, constructed between 1911 and 1930. Designed by Edwin Lutyens at the height of his career, it was commissioned by Julius Drewe, founder of the Home and Colonial Stores, who believed the site lay within lands of a supposed medieval ancestor, Drogo de Teigne. Though Lutyens initially lamented Drewe's insistence on a castle, he created one of his finest works—a mixed-revivalist structure built of granite on a mountain that, as architectural critic Christopher Hussey observed, authentically *is* a castle rather than merely pretending to be one. The Grade I listed building was given to the National Trust in 1974, becoming the first twentieth-century structure the Trust acquired.
