Central Plaza 1 is a 174-metre skyscraper in Brisbane's central business district, designed by renowned Japanese architect Kisho Kurokawa and completed in 1988. The 44-storey tower at 345 Queen Street became emblematic of Australia's Bicentenary and World Expo 88. At completion, it was Brisbane's tallest building—a distinction it held until Riparian Plaza's completion in 2005. The structure is distinguished by its striking facade, plush foyers, and integration of advanced technology systems, including a unique rotating window-cleaning mechanism at the tower's apex that suspends cleaners for maintenance. Originally identified with the AAMI insurance company through prominent signage and a ground-floor branch, it is now managed by JLL and has become recognized as one of Australia's most iconic buildings. Central Plaza 1 anchors the larger Central Plaza Complex, which includes the smaller Central Plaza 2 (110 metres) and Central Plaza 3 (57 metres), all sharing similar design vocabulary.
