The David H. Koch Theater, located on the Upper West Side of Manhattan at Lincoln Center, is a postmodern opera house and ballet venue designed by Philip Johnson. Originally opened in 1964 as the New York State Theater, it has served as the permanent home of New York City Ballet since its inception and hosted the New York City Opera until 2011. Situated on the south side of Lincoln Center's main plaza opposite David Geffen Hall near 63rd Street and Columbus Avenue, the theater was renamed in honor of philanthropist David Koch.
