The Dr. Richard and Paulina Stuart House stands in Des Moines as a 2½-story Victorian frame dwelling constructed by 1895. Its irregular plan incorporates a hipped roof, gablet, and various gables characteristic of the period's domestic architecture. Situated on one of ten plats originally owned by Drake University, the house gained historical significance through its connection to the university's pioneering financing methods, which shaped residential development around the campus. Dr. Richard and Paulina D. Stuart acquired the property in 1891 and maintained ownership until 1907. The building was recognized for its historical importance when it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988.
