This 1½-story frame cottage, built in Des Moines in 1896, exemplifies Victorian-era residential architecture with Stick Style details. The house features an irregular plan, chamfered corners, decorative shinglework, moulded lintels, beaded corner boards, and a modest front porch with shed roof. The property's significance stems from Drake University's innovative land-financing practices in the late nineteenth century; the University sold the lot in 1887, beginning a chain of ownership that led to J. P. Morey's acquisition in 1896, the year of the house's construction. Morey retained the property for twenty-three years. The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1988.
