Located in Des Moines, Iowa, the Elliott Furniture Company is a historic building whose architectural identity evolved significantly across more than a century. Originally constructed in 1891 in the Italianate style for Gustav Newlen, an undertaker and cabinet maker, the structure was acquired by the Elliott family in 1899, who unified its two storefronts into a single façade for the Elliott Anderson Furniture Company. The building underwent extensive modernization in 1936 with the installation of large display windows on both floors, followed by another renovation four years later that introduced glazed brick and fluted terra cotta pilasters, transforming its appearance to Art Moderne. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2015, the building stands as a testament to the commercial and architectural shifts of early twentieth-century Des Moines.
