Fort Nassau, located near Moree in Ghana's Central Region, was the first fortification established by the Dutch on the Gold Coast, founded in 1612. Built during the early phase of European colonial expansion in West Africa, the fort served as a crucial trading post in the African gold trade and later became implicated in the Atlantic slave trade. Its historical significance earned it inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1979 alongside other Ghanaian castles and forts, recognizing its importance as a testimony to this transformative and tragic period of African history.
