The Gateshead Millennium Bridge is a pedestrian and cyclist tilt bridge spanning the River Tyne between Gateshead's arts quarter and Newcastle's Quayside, designed by architectural practice WilkinsonEyre and structural engineering firm Gifford. Opened to the public in 2001, it was the first tilting bridge of its kind ever constructed. Its distinctive high-tech form—likened to a blinking or winking eye due to its shape and tilting mechanism—has earned it award recognition. The bridge stands as the twentieth tallest structure in Gateshead, shorter than the nearby Tyne Bridge.
