Goodspeed Musicals, located in East Haddam, Connecticut, is a non-profit theater organization centered on a landmark opera house built in 1877, now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The distinctive structure, a prominent feature visible from the Connecticut River, has become a birthplace for celebrated American musicals, including Annie, Man of La Mancha, and Shenandoah. Beyond its historic main theater, the organization operates the Norma Terris Theatre in Chester and offers writing and performing seminars. Since its founding, Goodspeed Musicals has produced 250 musicals featuring over 70 world premieres and sent 21 productions to Broadway, earning recognition as one of America's foremost regional theaters—a distinction underscored by two special Tony Awards, granted in 1980 and 1995 for its outstanding contributions to American musical theater.
