Gottorf Castle in Schleswig, Schleswig-Holstein, stands as one of the most important secular buildings in the region, situated on an island in the Schlei River some forty kilometers from the Baltic Sea. Originally a medieval castle, the structure was repeatedly rebuilt and expanded over more than eight centuries, evolving through Renaissance fortress phases into its present Baroque form designed by the architect Nicodemus Tessin the Younger. As the ancestral seat of the Holstein-Gottorp branch of the House of Oldenburg, the castle's historical significance is amplified by its connection to the dynasty that produced four Swedish kings and several Russian Emperors during the eighteenth century. Today it remains a protected heritage monument in Schleswig-Holstein.
