Hart House Theatre is a 428-seat Art Deco theatre located within Hart House on the University of Toronto's St. George campus in Toronto. Opened in November 1919, it was not part of the original building plans but was added through funding from the Massey Foundation, with construction supervised by Vincent Massey and his wife Alice. The theatre was designed by Toronto architects Sproat and Rolph. Roy Mitchell served as its first artistic director before resigning over disagreements with the Board of Syndics, while Healey Willan directed music from 1919 to 1925. The venue attracted accomplished actors and aspiring performers, and notably, Group of Seven members Lawren Harris, A. Y. Jackson, Arthur Lismer, and J. E. H. MacDonald painted sets in the 1920s. Following its 1946 transfer to university control, artistic director Robert Gill established it as a training ground for students, launching the careers of performers including Donald Sutherland, William Hutt, and Kate Reid.
