Located in the Chestnut Hill section of Newton, Massachusetts, this 2½-story residence exemplifies Shingle style architecture from the 1890s. Built in 1894 by William R. Dupee for Dr. Frederick William Payne, the house was designed by Boston architect Horace Frazer of Chapman & Frazer. Its distinctive character derives from a mixed material palette: fieldstone forms the substantial ground floor, while dark brown shingles clad the upper levels. Late Victorian refinement appears in diamond-paned windows set throughout the façade. A 1½-story addition with an attached garage was added during the 1930s. The well-preserved structure was recognized with National Register listing in 1986.
