The Imam Husayn Shrine in Karbala, Iraq, is the mausoleum of Husayn ibn Ali, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad and third Shia Imam, who was killed and beheaded during the Battle of Karbala. Built in the tradition of Islamic architecture, the shrine stands as one of the holiest sites in Shia Islam. Beyond Husayn himself, the complex is believed to house his teenage son Ali al-Akbar at his feet and infant son Ali al-Asghar upon his chest, as well as many of his companions who fell in battle. Adjacent to the northeast lies the Al-Abbas Shrine, dedicated to Husayn's younger brother, with the space between them known as Bayn al-Haramayn. The site draws millions of pilgrims annually, particularly during Ashura in Muharram and the Arba'in pilgrimage, constituting the largest annual public gathering on earth.
