Imperial War Museum North, located in Trafford, Greater Manchester, opened in July 2002 as the first northern branch of the Imperial War Museum. Designed by architect Daniel Libeskind, the building exemplifies Deconstructivist architecture and occupies a site on Trafford Wharf Road overlooking the Manchester Ship Canal, in an area that served as a key World War II industrial centre and was heavily bombed during the Manchester Blitz. The museum explores the impact of modern conflicts on people and society through permanent chronological and thematic displays supported by hourly audiovisual presentations, alongside a programme of temporary exhibitions. Attracting 470,000 visitors in its opening year, the building garnered architectural awards and prize nominations. The museum operates with free admission and is funded by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport supplemented by self-generated income.
