Located in Maquoketa, Iowa, the J.E. Squiers House is a well-preserved 1882 residence that exemplifies late nineteenth-century domestic architecture in the town's most prominent residential neighborhood. Built of brick and rising two and a half stories, the house blends Queen Anne and Stick style elements, featuring a central hall floor plan with two rectangular projecting bays, a three-sided bay window, and a complex roofline of hipped and intersecting gable sections augmented by a rear kitchen addition. The house was constructed debt-free by James Emery Squiers, a prominent local businessman who owned a dry goods establishment and later served as president of the First National Bank of Maquoketa until his death in 1911. The house was individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1995 and is also a contributing property to the West Pleasant Street Historic District.
