The Jay Pritzker Pavilion is a bandshell designed by Frank Gehry and located in Millennium Park in Chicago's Loop community area. Commissioned in April 1999 and constructed between June 1999 and July 2004, the pavilion opened officially on July 16, 2004. Named after Jay Pritzker of the Hyatt Hotels family, it serves as the centerpiece of Millennium Park and hosts the Grant Park Symphony Orchestra and Chorus, the Grant Park Music Festival—one of the nation's few remaining free outdoor classical music series—and a wide range of performances from rock bands to opera singers, as well as community activities like yoga. With a capacity of 11,000, the pavilion complements the larger Petrillo Music Shell and shares loading dock and backstage facilities with the indoor Harris Theater for Music and Dance, which lies beneath it. All rehearsals are open to the public, with trained guides available for music festival rehearsals. To circumvent historic height restrictions in Grant Park, the city classifies the pavilion as a work of art rather than a building.
