The Lake Street Sash & Door Company is a complex of three Moderne-style factory buildings in Minneapolis, located between Hiawatha Avenue and the Milwaukee Road railroad tracks, spanning the block between East 40th and 41st Streets. Founded by Helmar Knudsen in 1916 or 1917, the company initially operated from a location on 4th Avenue South before relocating around 1919 to proximity with the railroad for logistical advantage. The present complex, completed by October 1926, comprised a main factory designed to accommodate 100 workers, an enclosed lumber shed, and a warehouse built shortly thereafter. The company flourished through mid-century, reaching peak sales of $3 million annually in the 1950s while supplying doors and millwork to projects across the Midwest, including municipal buildings in Iowa and Wisconsin. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2016, it remains the only surviving millwork operation along the Hiawatha Avenue corridor, a testament to Minneapolis's industrial heritage.
