The Los Angeles County Museum of Art, located on Wilshire Boulevard in the Miracle Mile district adjacent to the La Brea Tar Pits, was founded in 1961 after separating from the Los Angeles Museum of History, Science and Art. Four years later, it moved into a complex designed by architect William Pereira. Now the largest art museum in the western United States, LACMA holds more than 150,000 works ranging from ancient to contemporary art and draws nearly a million visitors annually. Beyond its permanent collections, the museum hosts film and concert series and has undergone significant expansion since the 1980s, with additional buildings added over several decades to accommodate its growing holdings and programming.
