Mariam Al-Batool Mosque in Paola, Malta, is the country's only officially recognized mosque-designed structure. Built in limestone and completed in 1982, the mosque was formally inaugurated in 1984 following the laying of its foundation stone by Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi in 1978. Originally constructed to serve Malta's Muslim population—then predominantly Libyan economic migrants—the mosque was designed to promote Sunni Islam within Maltese society. Its unique architectural and religious significance has made it colloquially known simply as "il-Moskea" among locals, despite proposals for other Muslim places of worship on the island.
