The Mercado de las Carnes, built in 1926 in Ponce, Puerto Rico, was the first building on the island to pioneer the pedestrian mall concept, merging social and architectural functions in a single structure. Designed by Rafael Carmoega, the meat market showcases Art Deco and neo-Mudéjar architectural styles characteristic of the interwar period. Located in the alley connecting Mayor and Leon streets between Estrella and Guadalupe, the plaza and its surrounding passage form an integrated urban space. Originally known colloquially as La Plaza de los Perros and formally as Plaza Juan Ponce de León, the structure was substantially rebuilt in 1992 under Mayor Churumba's administration. It was recognized on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986.
