Built in 1872 on Nelson Head, a headland northeast of Nelson Bay in New South Wales, this unusual 10-metre lighthouse lacks the traditional tower structure found on most beacon stations. Instead of rising from a tower, the light was originally displayed through a window of the lantern room and was later mounted outside the building. The lighthouse guided vessels into Port Stephens, and though now inactive, it remains a distinctive example of unconventional lighthouse design on the Australian coast.
