The Palácio do Planalto, designed by Oscar Niemeyer and inaugurated on 21 April 1960, is the official workplace of the president of Brazil, located at the Praça dos Três Poderes in Brasília. Built in the modernist style, the palace has served as the workplace of every Brazilian president since Juscelino Kubitschek and houses not only the president but also the Vice-President and Chief of Staff. Situated east of the National Congress of Brazil and across from the Supreme Federal Court, the building is part of the UNESCO-designated Brasília World Heritage Site. As the seat of government, the term "Planalto" has become a metonym for Brazil's executive branch, while the presidential residence proper is maintained separately at the Palácio da Alvorada.
