The Pierce County Courthouse in Rugby, North Dakota, completed in 1908, exemplifies the civic grandeur of early twentieth-century courthouses designed by the St. Paul architectural firm Buechner & Orth in Beaux-Arts style. The front facade showcases brown Hebron pressed brick with Bedford stone trim and paired stone columns, while a soaring 28-foot-diameter dome topped with silver coloring rises 100 feet from grade line—a feature hailed in 1910 as unrivaled in the state. The interior features purple marble wainscoting and pink marble pilasters in the rotunda and entry hall, with four murals depicting Pierce County's history and an ornamental beamed ceiling in the second-floor courtroom. A Latin inscription reading "PAX" and "LEX" crowns the main entrance. Originally accommodating county commissioners, auditor, treasurer, and register of deeds, the courthouse complex includes an adjacent two-story structure that served as the sheriff's residence and jail. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980 as part of a multiple property submission documenting Buechner and Orth courthouses across North Dakota.
