The Playboy Mansion West, located in Holmby Hills near Beverly Hills in Los Angeles, is a Tudor Revival and Gothic Revival mansion designed by architect Arthur Rolland Kelly. Hugh Hefner, founder of Playboy magazine, purchased the property in 1971 and made it his residence until his death in 2017, with the home's acquisition encouraged by Playboy Playmate Barbi Benton. From the 1970s onward, the mansion became famous as the venue for Hefner's extravagant parties attended by celebrities and socialites. The property is now owned by Daren Metropoulos and serves multiple functions including corporate activities, television and magazine production, charitable events, and civic gatherings. Hefner had previously established an original Playboy Mansion in Chicago's Gold Coast in 1959, a brick and limestone residence built in 1899, which he donated to the School of the Art Institute of Chicago after his permanent relocation to California in 1975.
